The difference between a dry ball mill and a wet ball mill is mainly reflected in the word dry/wet.The so-called dry/wet refers to whether water is required during the grinding process of a ball mill.

-A ball mill that requires water to participate in grinding is called a wet ball mill.

-A ball mill that does not require water to participate in grinding is called a dry ball mill.

Dry ball mill

Dry ball mill

Since certain minerals cannot be in contact with water and are prone to chemical reactions in case of water, the grinding process must be kept dry.At this time, a dry ball mill needs to be used.

Dry ball mill, through natural discharge method, or through a wind system to discharge the ground and crushed material outside the barrel of the ball mill.

Wet ball mill

Wet ball mill

In a wet ball mill, after the material is ground and crushed, it is discharged into the cylinder of the ball mill through the water flow.

Taking the XKJ GROUP wet overflow type ball mill as an example, when the slurry is higher than the lower edge of the hollow shaft at the discharge end, it will overflow the ball mill cylinder by itself. The hollow shaft has anti-spiral blades, which can return the overflowing steel balls and coarse ore blocks to the mill and continue to participate in the grinding and crushing process.

Should I choose a dry ball mill or a wet ball mill?

Dry ball mills sometimes cause grinding dead ends due to design reasons, and the materials located in the dead ends cannot be ground.

The wet ball mill will not have dead ends, but the ground material needs to be dried.

Generally speaking, wet ball mills require less auxiliary equipment and higher grinding efficiency of wet ball mills, so most mineral processing plants use wet ball mills.

But there are exceptions, such as

-Certain minerals react chemically with water

-The climatic conditions are harsh, the temperature continues to be low below zero, and it is not suitable for water use.

-Some dry and water-scarce areas in Africa

These special circumstances are not suitable for the use of wet ball mills, and dry ball mills need to be used.
