1. Change in particle size distribution

Coarsening of particle size: The size of the grinding media after wear becomes smaller and irregular, and the impact force and grinding force are weakened, and the material cannot be ground to the specified fineness, resulting in the overall coarsening of the product particle size. For example, in cement production, if the grinding media is severely worn, the cement particles produced are too coarse, which will affect the setting time and strength of the cement.

 

Uneven particle size distribution: Different degrees of wear increase the size difference of the grinding media, and the effect on the material during the grinding process is inconsistent, which will make the product particle size distribution uneven, affecting the stability and performance of the product. Taking ceramic production as an example, uneven particle size distribution will cause uneven shrinkage of the ceramic body during sintering, resulting in defects such as deformation and cracking.

 

2. Decreased product purity

Metal impurities mixed in: If the grinding medium is made of metal, such as steel balls, metal debris will fall off and mix into the product during the wear process. In some industries with extremely high purity requirements, such as electronic materials, food, and medicine, these metal impurities will seriously affect product quality. Media material pollution: For some special grinding media, such as ceramic balls, some chemical components may be released after wear, causing pollution to the product. For example, after the ceramic grinding media containing heavy metal elements is worn, the heavy metal ions may migrate to the ground material, affecting the safety and purity of the product.

 

3. Poor product shape and surface quality

Irregular product shape: Normal grinding media can make the material subject to a relatively uniform force during the grinding process, and the product shape is relatively regular. However, the worn grinding media will cause the material to be unevenly stressed, resulting in irregular product shape. In abrasive production, irregularly shaped abrasive particles will affect their use in the grinding and polishing process, reducing grinding efficiency and the surface quality of the workpiece.

 

Increased surface roughness: Since the surface of the abrasive medium is no longer smooth after wear, more scratches and unevenness will be produced on the product surface during the grinding process, increasing the surface roughness of the product. For example, in the grinding of optical glass, the increase in the surface roughness of the product will affect its light transmittance and optical performance, resulting in a decrease in the imaging quality of the lens.
